Track Descriptions
Social Justice and Sustainability
Creating a more sustainable future is the moral imperative of our time with an optimized and balanced approach towards People, Planet, and Profits to attain the sustainable development goals defined by the United Nations. Sustainability proposes the concepts of reduce, recycle, and reuse in business practices as well as consumer behavior. Working towards a sustainable future undoubtedly requires a collaborative effort from multiple academic disciplines. The track “Sustainability” invites researchers, professionals, and entrepreneurs to present conceptual, theoretical, as well as empirical work and furthermore to stimulate debate on how to achieve more sustainable development. The intention is to discuss, inspire, and promote the role of social entrepreneurship in the global green agenda by means of research, education, and community engagement. In addition to traditional paper presentations, contributions are welcome on discussion forums, case studies, artistic and playful interventions, or practical demonstrations.
Social Entrepreneurship and Social Innovation
The social entrepreneurship and innovation track is designed for community members, entrepreneurship educators and scholars to demonstrate innovative programming that lead to successful social ventures, new approaches for teaching and experiential exercises in social entrepreneurship and social innovation; applied research and theories that advance understanding of social enterprises and social entrepreneurs.
Proposals for panels on social innovation, challenges/solutions facing the black community; or sessions that teach participants critical skills for success in social entrepreneurship such as generating a social business model, social ideation, and creating benefit corporations, b corps, or L3C’s (Low-profit Limited Liability Corporations).
Intersection of Social Justice and Social Entrepreneurship
Social justice seeks fair and equitable distribution of wealth, opportunities, and privileges. Promoting social entrepreneurship does not necessarily guarantee the advent of novel social solutions that advance social justice outcomes. A key goal of social entrepreneurship is to remedy social ills while positively contributing to the entrepreneurial and economic outcomes. There are a dearth of contributions that explore linkages between social justice research and activism, traditional business and innovation models, and entrepreneurial intentions/outcomes. The track invites researchers, professionals, activists, and entrepreneurs to present conceptual, theoretical, and empirical work highlighting alternate pathways to social creation that align with moral answerability. The pathways emphasize more profound social sensemaking and sense-giving. The intention here is to discuss, inspire and promote the discovery of reflective, together-telling, and storytelling elements at the intersection of social justice inquiry and social entrepreneurship. In addition to traditional paper presentations, contributions are welcome on discussion forums, case studies, artistic and playful interventions, storytelling, or practical demonstrations. For submissions focusing solely on social justice/activism, presenters are encouraged to include implications section, or an audience discussion on social entrepreneurship outcomes as a result of the paper, case study, intervention, or demonstration.
